How to successfully move to London (or UK)

2 months before departure

Target a recruiting agency
Agencies (like oho, client-server) are now recruiting abroad for jobs in London and Dublin, it's easier than before. You will not get the job of your life through them, but it's a start.
If you want to meet the companies, I strongly suggest the Silicon Milk RoundAbout (I find the job of my dreams there) https://www.siliconmilkroundabout.com/

When you arrive

Accomodation
Strong suggestion:

  1. Daniel Paul Residential if you can afford a place on your own, danielpaul.co.uk
  2. drayton properties if you are renting just a room

Before focusing in finding a job, find a place to stay because it will take few days to find a job, meanwhile it takes a lot of time to find a place which is right for you. Find a place, the job will come. Viceversa is more difficult (you will not have time after, you will present yourself at the interviews with the accommodation thoughts distracting you, you will find a bad place, ... a nightmare!).

Rights - Rent
http://www.hse.gov.uk/gas/domestic/faqtenant.htm
By law landlords must carry out an annual gas safety check and provide tenants with a copy of the record of that check. New tenants should receive a copy before they move in and existing tenants should get a copy within 28 days of the annual check being done. If you don't have a current gas safety record you can report to HSE via form LGSR1.
Ask for a new mattress, it's in your rights

Bureaucracy
Meanwhile, get the NINO and open a bank account (do not discourage yourself, some banks will not let you open an account, others will).

Reading
Sorry, I do advertise my book: http://www.xinxii.com/en/italian-aurora-p-349676.html

What follows is the old version

2 months before departure

Target a recruiting agency
You need a job, right? Since you are not settle in, your application are going to be discarded no matter your cv is looking brilliant.
So you need someone who somehow can guarantee you are actually going to settle in London so you can get a face to face interview. What I did was to search the available positions on  Monster and apply for them: most of them were advertised by the same recruiting agency, and it was this agency which was able to present my cv and to actually book a face to face interview with my current employer before I have actually landed in London.
So find someone who believes in you, otherwise all your applications will be discarded.

Accommodation - Estate Agents
I do suggest danielpaul.co.uk, they ask just 50£ as a administration/reference fee (I was asked as low as 150£ and as much as 270£ by other agencies). And they have the lowest prices in the market. Their website does not look updated but in London you will find out that few agencies update the websites: it is useless, the  properties get rented so quickly. Just call (or walk in) and see what is available.

Size every opportunity
Here in London everything is so quick that if you see an opportunity, you have to size it immediately, a second after it is too late

Life

In this city, people quits the job easily. People just move elsewhere. In January you have 20 close friends you spend time with every week, than in April you can find out 15 of them have changed city or habits or ... So if you like close, long lasting friendship, be prepared to build such relationships. You should be active and create the occasions to build the relationships, otherwise you will end up living as the majority of Londoners: with untied, ready to loose friendships.
